Questions often asked by coaches of participating schools are
- "How do you determine levels?" or
- "Why are we in Level such-and-such when we have only this many students in our building?'
Good questions!!! Since we started ranking schools by levels in 1994, I simply use the same figures that your school uses to determine your "division" in athletic events. Up until recently, on October 1 of each year, your school sent the enrollment figures to the Ohio High School Athletic Association for your 9th, 10th, and 11th graders (you may need to get those 9th grade figures from a freshman school or from middle schools). These numbers are then used the FOLLOWING school year, when these students will be 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, in order to determine your athletic division. However, NOW the OHSAA receives your enrollment figures EVERY OTHER YEAR, and your enrollment totals last for two years. So your classification level for the 2005 Contest was determined by your enrollment figures of October, 2003. Your classification level for the 2006 Contest was determined by your enrollment figures of October 2004. BUT YOUR CLASSIFICATION level for the 2007 contest was determined by those SAME enrollment figures from October 2004. In October 2006, your school sent the enrollment figures for grades 9, 10, and 11 to the OHSAA. Those figures will now be used to determine your classification level for the 2008 Contest AND for the 2009 Contest. In October of 2008, your school will again send in enrollment figures, and those numbers will be used to determine the levels for 2010 and 2011.
These figures are in the OHIO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DIRECTORY, which is in the possession of your principal and your athletic director. The figures given are broken down into boys and girls. Interestingly, WE ARE THE ONLY GROUP THAT USES THE COMBINED ENROLLMENT FIGURES (girls plus boys) to determine the levels in our unisex competition
If your school is not a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, then I get your four-year enrollment from the Ohio Education Directory also in possession of your principal. If that fails, then I call your school to get the enrollment figures
